When we think about our favourite brands, we see their success. We forget that many entrepreneurs started their business from the kitchen table, and worked their way up from there. This is exactly how Chrissie Rucker, founder of one of my favourite brands, The White Company, started out: running her business from home until it became full to overflowing with boxes.
It was five years after officially launching The Everygirl, one of my favourite lifestyle blogs, that the team moved into their first office space. The team had always worked remotely from home with staff in both Boston and Alabama, but after they hired two full-time employees from Chicago, the timing was right for a centralised workspace in Chicago’s West Loop.
Iconic brands really can be launched from the kitchen table. But with so many distractions, running your business from home can be a challenge. Follow these top tips to get the most from your day and set yourself up for business success.
1. Desk Space
Ideally, carve out an area of your home as an office space so you are actually physically ‘going to work’ in the morning and leaving it at the end of the day, allowing you to switch off. It needn’t be big; just somewhere with enough room for a desk and chair, a place you can differentiate from the rest of your home.
2. Create A Schedule
Put your boundaries in writing. This may seem like an unnecessary step, but putting pen to paper will help you take your guidelines that much more seriously, thus making you all the more likely to actually respect them. Studies show that people who write down their goals are over 80% more likely to actually achieve them than those who don’t.
Put your schedule somewhere you can see it as a friendly nudge to follow the structure and schedule you’ve created. Then, make your best effort to stick to it.
3. Protect Your Weekends
When you work at home, it’s all easy to lose track of what day it is. If you’re not careful, you’ll find your working week stretching out into the weekend. So make sure you keep some time that is completely work-free – even if it’s not a traditional Saturday and Sunday.
4. Create Positive Daily Rituals
We are creatures of habit and therefore create rituals. The key question is whether our rituals are intentional and set us up for success or are counterproductive and hinder our business development?
To mark the transition from home to business, it’s a good idea to set up daily habits that set your working day up for success. This could be making a cup of coffee and drinking it while you review your key priorities for the day ahead. And making yourself a special cup of tea which you drink as you tidy your desk at the end of the working day.
5. Identify Priority Daily and Weekly Actions
There are a few key actions, which if practiced consistently, will drive your business results and mean you do hit your targets and achieve your goals. Work out what these are, and make sure that you schedule time each day to complete these before you do anything else.

6. Budget For A Workspace
Running your business from home means you’ll save a chunk of money from not paying rent and business rates. Cost out what this would cost you and include this sum within your budget. Use it to determine your pricing even though you’re not spending this sum out just now.
Each month, transfer the amount you would have spent on rent and business rates into a separate savings account. Over time, you’ll save up a nice nest egg which you can put towards premises when the time is right.
7. Meet Other People
Running a business from home can be isolating and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll miss the daily chit chat and camaraderie that happens in an office. Find ways of connecting with other people – from Skype coffee chats to occasional co-working to meeting a group of people for Friday night drinks.
