THE POWER OF MOMENTUM IN BUSINESS

Companies That Build The Wave, Ride The Wave

A number of business associates – and this was just early stage entrepreneurs – have commented to me about how this quiet August was. The phones had stopped ringing and they were hearing crickets. This was having an impact on money coming in which meant they were spending less. Naturally this had a knock on effect on their suppliers and so the downward spiral continued.

The Power Of Momentum In Business

Here’s why they were hearing crickets. A number of them had gone on holiday, and not considered the unintended consequences of taking time off i.e. less marketing = less sales = less customers = less revenue.

And hadn’t realised that one of their best friends had gone missing in action.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to a very good friend, who as it happens, is also close to entrepreneurs like Jessica Alba and Victoria Beckham, sports legends Andy Murray and Roger Federer, not to mention every other super-achiever.

[Drum roll]

Meet …. Big Mo.’

Do you sometimes wonder why successful people become more successful, the rich get richer and the lucky get luckier? The answer is simple. They’ve got Big Mo on their side, in good times and bad. So who – or what – exactly is Big Mo?

Big Mo is momentum. It takes tremendous effort to get Big Mo to pay your business a visit, but once you do, watch out! Think of Big Mo like trying to launch a rocket. It takes a HUGE amount of energy for a rocket to break free of the earth’s gravity field. But once it does, it takes the rocket very little energy to continue its journey because the momentum it’s already gained allows it to move on cruise control.

Or to put it another way, objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless they’re acted upon by an external force. And they stay in motion unless something stops their momentum.

Success requires first expending ten units of effort to produce one unit of results. Your momentum will then produce ten units of results with each unit of effort.” – Charles J. Givens

Momentum works in exactly the same way in business. It takes a huge amount of effort to get a business off the ground and establish a steady flow of new leads and sales. Far more effort than we think, especially when it comes to marketing. Most business owners under-estimate just how much marketing they need to do to get any sort of traction. That’s another story which I talk about in my post ‘Sky Rocket Your Marketing With The Rule of Seven.’

Consistency will give you a competitive edge and will keep momentum on your side. More importantly, consistency will continually increase your confidence.” – Unknown

My point is that over a holiday period, it’s essential that we build on the momentum we’ve worked so hard to create by planning out a series of marketing activities that continue to run whilst we’re away. And that we automate and delegate as many of these as possible so that we continue to build brand awareness and generate leads. Otherwise the risk is that our business loses momentum, slows down and worse still, grinds to a halt whilst we’re away.

Success is like a snowball… it takes momentum to build and the more you roll in the right direction, the bigger it gets.” – Steve Ferrante
