When I first started my business, I promised myself I’d take a month long sabbatical every August. Whilst I’m not heading to Bali this year, I am clocking off and clocking out until September. At least from my blog.
This year has been pretty amazing so far and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my writing. Another of my wishes when I started my business was to have time to write about business and leadership. I’m very lucky to have a business that allows me to do just this. And I’m lucky to be able to choose the work I take on, the incredibly talented people I work with and the direction I want to take my business.
Which brings me to my third wish when starting my business. To have the freedom to be creative and build a business on my terms. Creativity, in whatever form it takes, requires space for long-range thinking and planning. And space comes from disconnecting, switching off, re-energising, re-connecting with what really matters and becoming re-inspired. And what with re-locating to the Sussex coast, travelling up and down to London and taking steps to build a new network here, there’s not been much time for that this year.
Whilst I love writing articles for my website, it takes a lot of my time and energy. At times the routine can feel quite relentless. Which is why I’m taking a break from writing over August. Although if you subscribe to my newsletter, I’ve got you covered. And I’ll still be posting on social media, particularly Instagram, the platform I love most.
This is going to be a working sabbatical. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to build out my platform going forward, and the channels I want to use to share my content. I’ve got some pretty big changes planned, and now I need the time and the space to work on these. And now that I have a complete collection of photographs, it’s time to work on my re-brand which feels like it’s been in the pipeline for months. Probably because it has!
So it’s time to kick back. To work to my own schedule. To spend lazy afternoons on the beach on the days when there’s sunshine. To head off on adventures. To hang out with friends. To go hiking in the beautiful Sussex countryside. There will be picnics, cake and glasses of gin. And lots of time to work on my own projects. I can’t wait!
August is the perfect time for us all to take time off. Yes, it does take some planning if you’re not to lose the valuable momentum you’ve worked so hard to build. But it’s an important part of your self-care, to keep you refreshed and energised as a business owner.
Have a wonderful summer, whatever you’re up to. I’ll be back on the 1th September. See you on the other side!
